Chapter
Eighteen
Roran didnât feel settled in Blightwood quite yet. He needed to take some time to get accustomed to the city, but it was difficult to feel like this was a place where he could be home. After meeting with the Curator, he had gone around with Lunal through the section where he was staying, which had allowed him to see a little more of the Curatorâs part of the city, though it did not make Roran feel any closer to being a part of this place. The Curator controlled one aspect of the city, but it was smaller than some others. Lunal had explained that there had been a war for control over land, and they had gradually settled into an uneasy truce regarding the boundaries.
âThey even mark them,â Lunal said, motioning to some of the stones that made up the border of this section. âItâs ridiculous if you ask me, but I suppose it allows those tied to one section to know where it is safe to travel.â
âWhat happens if I were to travel outside the section?â Roran asked.
âProbably not much because you arenât truly tied to the Curator. Not yet. Eventually, though, you will probably carry some trace of the celestial signature on you, and others will realize you are with him, so if you do leave this section and get involved in one of the others, it is much more likely that you will have some problems. Not in the neighboring sections, since the Curator generally has peace with them, but beyond thatâ¦â She shook her head. âOutside of the neighboring sections, you risk encountering more danger. Thatâs why I think you need to be careful here. Stay in this section, still under the protection of the Curator, and work to continue to get better.â
Roran snorted. âAssuming I make any king of progress while weâre here.â
âHeâs going to work with you, Roran. The real challenge is not in him working with you, though; itâs in you learning what you need to know. I think it will come along, but you will need to trust the process and what heâs trying to show you so that you can do what you need to gain the next step in your progression. You are still only adept.â
That statement, more than anything else, reminded Roran of how different things were here.
Only adept.
Adept wouldnât have been an issue if Roran had been back home because he would be considered fairly advanced, especially at his age. The idea that he was already starting to think about progressing to expert and hoping that he could learn what he needed to know to make that leap seemed impossible, but it also felt essential now. If he did not learn what was necessary and did not gain the required control, Roran feared what might happen to him, as there were quite a few others with real power in the city. Many were significantly more powerful than he was. And those who were at his same level were quite a bit younger than him.
